September Sports Awards Celebrate Uganda’s Sporting Excellence

The September Sports Awards recognized the outstanding achievements of athletes across various disciplines, with three key figures emerging as the winners. The late 1999 Africa Rally Champion received a posthumous award for his lasting contribution to Ugandan motorsport, accepted by his widow Patience Muhangi. This award honored his enduring legacy as the only Ugandan driver to have won the African championship, a record that still stands today.

In football, Herbert Assimwe of Wakiso Giants won the September Football Accolade for his impressive performances in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League and Airtel Masaza Cup, where he scored crucial goals in every match. His rise as a forward has marked him as a player to watch in Ugandan football.

In boxing, heavyweight fighter Herbert Matovu took home the Boxer of September title after a first-round knockout victory against Kheri Mbaruku in the Africa Boxing Union Regional Title fight, held at YMCA Kampala. Matovu’s dominance in the ring has set the stage for further successes in his boxing career.

Lastly, Isaac Ariho was honored as the Woodball Player of the Month after leading Uganda Prisons to their third consecutive Woodball League Trophy. His consistent victories, both in singles and doubles, highlighted his leadership and technical prowess in the sport.

These awards reflect the strength and diversity of talent within Uganda’s sporting community, showcasing excellence in motorsport, football, boxing, and woodball.
