Troops from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Artillery Division have completed a 20-kilometre route march exercise aimed at enhancing combat readiness, endurance, and teamwork among military personnel.
The exercise was led by Maj Gen Daniel Kakono and involved soldiers from the Artillery Division as well as attached units from the Ground-Based Air Defence and Army Aviation Command. Military officials described the exercise as part of routine preparedness activities designed to maintain operational effectiveness across UPDF formations.
Speaking after the march, Maj Gen Kakono highlighted the importance of physical training in building a capable and responsive military force.
“Physical exercise is not a formality. It strengthens our ability to perform missions, protects lives, and develops leadership skills among soldiers,” he said.
According to military officials, the route march tested the endurance and discipline of participating troops while encouraging coordination between different units. The exercise also served as a platform for promoting mental resilience and teamwork.
Maj Gen Kakono reflected on the historical significance of long-distance marches during the NRA liberation struggle, noting that such activities help younger soldiers appreciate the sacrifices that contributed to Uganda’s liberation and subsequent development.
“The march rekindles the spirit of the NRA revolutionary struggle. It reminds us of the commitment and resilience that helped liberate Uganda and laid the foundation for the country’s progress,” he said.
The commander called upon troops to maintain professionalism, discipline, and vigilance in the execution of their duties. He also encouraged them to take advantage of financial opportunities offered through the Wazalendo SACCO to improve their long-term welfare and economic security.
UPDF officials say similar exercises will continue to be conducted across military formations to ensure troops remain ready to respond to emerging security threats.
