Former U.S. President Donald Trump has taken credit for brokering a ceasefire in Gaza, calling it the “dawn of a new West Asia.” The truce is currently holding, with hostages and prisoners being exchanged.
However, tensions are rising after Trump warned that the United States could strike Hamas if it continues to kill civilians in Gaza, saying the militant group’s actions violate the peace agreement.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “If Hamas continues to kill people in Gaza — which was not the deal — we will have no choice but to go in and kill them.”
While the ceasefire brought initial calm, reports from inside Gaza suggest Hamas has launched a violent crackdown against local gangs accused of looting and collaboration with Israel. Graphic videos have circulated online showing public executions, sparking outrage and fear among civilians.
The U.S. leader initially dismissed the violence, suggesting Hamas was “restoring order,” but within 24 hours reversed his stance, condemning the killings as a breach of the truce. The shift followed mounting pressure from Israel, Washington officials, and media portrayals of chaos in Gaza.
The ceasefire remains in place, but the situation on the ground is fragile. Hamas retains control, Israel remains skeptical, and Trump’s “new West Asia” vision faces its first serious test.
