Tragic Accidents Shake Uganda’s Highways: UPDF Officer Among Fatalities

Tragedy struck along the bustling Kampala-Jinja highway in Buikwe District as a 54-year-old Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer, Major Nsamba Habib Katakabire, met his untimely demise in a fatal accident. The somber incident occurred at Sanga-Mabira, near the new picnic site, casting a pall of sorrow over the region.

Reports from Ssezibwa regional police spokesperson, Hellen Butoto, reveal the grim details of the collision. Maj. Nsamba, driving a Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number UBQ 424N, attempted to overtake multiple vehicles before colliding with a Howo Trailer, bearing registration number UBP 644S/UBP 770N, oncoming from the opposite direction. The aftermath saw his vehicle careen and collide with a Toyota Corona Premio, exacerbating the tragedy.

Tragically, the crash claimed the lives of not only Maj. Nsamba but also Muhammad Kasozi, the driver of the Howo Trailer, leaving PC Isaac Kayondo, the driver of the Toyota Corona Premio, injured and rushed to Kawolo Hospital for treatment.

As the community reels from the loss, the bodies of the deceased find their final resting place at the Kawolo hospital mortuary, awaiting a solemn postmortem examination. Meanwhile, the remnants of the vehicles involved serve as grim reminders of the fragility of life, housed at the Mabira police station pending IOV inspection.

The cause of the accident is attributed to reckless overtaking by Maj. Nsamba, underscoring the importance of vigilance and caution on the roads.

Sadly, this tragedy is not isolated, as just a day prior, another fatal accident claimed three lives in Mpigi. The collision, occurring at Kasuule Ayanguwa swamp along the Masaka-Kampala highway, involved two vehicles: the UAL 605 U Mitsubishi Fuso and the UBH 247L Subaru Forester. The collision proved fatal for three occupants of the Subaru Forester, including the driver, while another occupant sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Double Cure in Mpigi for urgent medical attention.

As the community mourns the loss of lives and grapples with the aftermath of these harrowing incidents, it serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the imperative of road safety measures.
